Common Thyroid Problems

January 23, 2015 //  by Dr Hagmeyer

Thyroid SystemThe thyroid is located at the base of the neck and resembles a small, butterfly-shaped gland. The thyroid is a part of a dynamic network of glands known as the endocrine system. This bodily system is a collection of glands which secretes hormones via the circulatory system which are then carried off toward other organs found throughout the human body.

Problems begin to arise when the thyroid gland manufactures too many (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism) hormones. These hormones are used to help regulate the body’s metabolism, or said another way, the systematic process of creating and using energy. A volatile thyroid gland is a keen precursor to depression, therefore it helps to become educated on the following conditions:

Hashimoto’s Disease – The most common thyroid problem found in the United States, Hashimoto is commonly found in middle-aged women, however it can occur at any age. Consequences of this disease imply the body’s immune system is attacking and slowly deteriorating the thyroid gland and its ability to secrete hormones.

Grave’s Disease – The most prevalent hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) condition. It may develop in both men and women, however women over 20 are the most susceptible. This autoimmune disorder occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly targets the thyroid gland, resulting in overproduction of the hormone responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism.

Goiter – A noncancerous expansion of the thyroid gland. Goiter results from a suboptimal intake of iodine in your daily diet causing the thyroid to overproduce hormones. This condition can affect anyone at any age, however women over the age of 50 are most susceptible to Goiter.

There is an inherent link between depression and a dysfunctional thyroid so patients should pay particular attention to their daily attitude and diets. If you think you may have a thyroid problem, or want to take extra precautions, please contact Dr. Richard Hagmeyer at Naperville Institute For Neuro Metabolic Solutions today.
