The Key to treating Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is first understanding that your SIBO is only a symptom of a much bigger problem. SIBO is not the root cause of your bloating, gas, abdominal distension, constipation, diarrhea, etc. If it was, your treatment would have already eliminated SIBO. While you might be happy to finally have a diagnosis of SIBO, having this diagnosis will not fix your SIBO. Most treatment methods for SIBO fail because the focus is only on killing overgrown bacteria with antimicrobials and starving bacteria with Low FODMAP, elemental diet, or Bi-phasic diets. This only scratches the surface of what SIBO treatment is all about.
SIBO Diets, probiotics, and hydrochloric acids will not address the many facets of Small Intestinal Bacterial overgrowth. Can you experience improvement, yes for a short period of time but ultimately, when the root causes are ignored- you will have a relapse. Does this sound familiar to you? Each of the programs I develop for my patients is tailored to their unique needs.
First and foremost, SIBO is a motility disorder and so understanding motility, or the reasons for a “lack of motility” is where the investigation begins. Each patient will have several reasons why motility and why digestion are problems.
Root Cause of SIBO
At DrHagmeyer.com we firmly believe in the value of functional testing for the successful treatment of SIBO. After all how do you fix something if you don’t know what caused it in the first place. Not everybody with SIBO has the same root cause, This is why only after we have thoroughly reviewed your case, can we determine the most appropriate tests. We don’t practice cookie cutter SIBO treatment nor do we have a cookie cutter treatment program.
My SIBO treatment program is designed to be a comprehensive approach to the root cause of SIBO and each patient we work with is paired up with one of our Functional Nutritionists to help implement a smooth transition into dietary changes.
