How Inflammation Causes Low Thyroid Part II- Dr Hagmeyer Video

July 6, 2018 //  by Dr Hagmeyer

Inflammation – The Silent Thyroid Disruptor

Hey folks Dr Hagmeyer here and today we are talking about a huge problem for those of you suffering with thyroid disease.

Today we are going to talk about the connection between inflammation and thyroid disease. Inflammation is the thyroids worst enemy. In fact every step involved in the production of thyroid hormones is influenced by inflammation and not in a good way.

The more research that comes out on the effects of inflammation the more we realize how it is a common denominator amongst all chronic disease.

When I say chronic disease, I’m talking about conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, weight loss resistance, metabolic disorders among many others.

when we work with patients there are many markers that we test for but some of the symptoms you might feel include asthma, allergies, chronic infections, joint pain, muscle pain, gas, bloating, loose stools, depression, skin conditions, depression, headaches, migraines, overweight, have high blood pressure.

If you have been watching any of my videos then you are probably already thinking, “But Dr Hagmeyer what’s causing the inflammation”

The 6 areas involved or areas in your body that promote Inflammation are going to be tied into;

1. Your diet- the foods you eat are either anti-inflammatory or pro-inflammatory-either stimulate or inhibit inflammation.
2. Gut infection but also how you are digesting foods
3. Low levels or even high Cortisol levels- reflection of adrenal function
4. Toxicity- from foods, vaccines, environment, medications
5. Hormones Imbalances-Estrogen, Insulin, Cortisol, Testosterone,
6. Dysglycemia– this is blood sugar imbalances

Inflammation can impact the thyroid in many ways and i want to spend just a few minutes taking the time and explaining to you how inflammation can impact the thyroid.

The first way inflammation can interfere with thyroid function lies in its ability to effect an area in the brain called the pituitary gland.

This pituitary gland make TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which tells the thyroid to make thyroid hormones, the pituitary gland also make LH and FSH which act on the ovaries to produce estrogen/progesterone) and regulate the rhythm of a woman’s cycle- in men these hormones produce testosterone, and produce sperm.

The other thing that the pituitary does is produce ACTH which stimulates your adrenals to make cortisol. So these are just a few examples of what can be effected from inflammation-

The second way inflammation can interfere with thyroid function lies in its ability to impair T4 to T3 conversion. This is known as thyroid under conversion.

After your thyroid has been stimulated by TSH, the thyroid will make T4 and T3.

T4 is inactive and T3 is the active thyroid hormone. T3 makes all the magic happen, inflammation blocks the conversion of T4 into T3.

If you can’t body is a poor converter caused by inflammation, you will suffer with fatigue weight gain, depression, brain fog, feeling sluggish etc.

And the third most common way that inflammation interferes with thyroid function is known as thyroid resistance.

Now if you ask your doctor about thyroid resistance, he will tell you that it is very rare and hardly every happens. The problem with this statement is that it’s rare because most doctors never look for it.

If all your doctor ever test is TSH and T4 you he will miss Thyroid resistance every time.

I did a video that goes into quite a bit more detail about this and the markers that can indirectly assess thyroid resistance Namely Reverse T3 and T3/Rt3 ratio.

So if you have not see that video after watching this video, I encourage you to go back and watch it.
In any case, people with thyroid resistance- your body is making sufficient amount of hormones but the problem is that because of inflammation the hormones can’t get into the cells. So with these people they have tests that look completely normal.

Unfortunately, there is no direct way of measuring cellular resistance. This is why I did the video that explains the importance of Reverse T3 and T3/Reverse T3 ratio.

In bring this video to a close, If you have hypothyroid symptoms, but your lab tests are normal, it’s likely that one of the problems or contributing factors that is affecting your thyroid is inflammation.

It doesn’t matter how much T4 thyroid replacement you take; if you are inflamed you won’t be able to use it.

Unfortunately, if you suffer with inflammation and tell your doctor your medication isn’t working, all too often the doctor’s response is to simply increase the dose. When that doesn’t work, the doctor increases it yet again.

As I said at the beginning of this video, the key to a successful treatment is an accurate understanding of what pattern of thyroid disease you have.

The reason the conventional approach fails is that it skips this step and gives the same treatment to everyone, regardless of the cause of their problem.

I hope you enjoyed today’s video, I hope you have a better understanding of how the thyroid can shut down because of inflammation.
