The Lyme IgM antibody assay is another serologic test in ELISA format, and it detects the presence of IgM antibodies to B. burgdorferi after exposure to an infected tick. Because IgM antibodies appear early in response to infection, this test may be positive two to six weeks after exposure.Â

Symptoms of Chronic Lyme
Chronic Lyme disease is an ongoing Borrelia burgdorferi infection that can involve any body system or tissue. The infection produces a wide range of symptoms and signs, which can be debilitating for some patients. Common symptoms include severe fatigue, migratory musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and impaired memory.
Neurological complications most often occur in early disseminated Lyme disease, with numbness, pain, weakness, facial palsy/droop (paralysis of the facial muscles), visual disturbances, and meningitis symptoms such as fever, stiff neck, and severe headache.
When left untreated or undertreated, however, Lyme disease can spread throughout the body and affect:
- The central nervous system (including psychiatric and cognitive effects)
- Muscles and joints
- Heart and circulation
- The reproductive system
- Skin
As Lymedisease.org points out, these symptoms can evolve, disappear, and reappear at different times in ones life.Â
