YouTube player

Hi I’m Dr Hagmeyer and I want to welcome you to my website or…. if you are watching this on YouTube, I want to welcome you to my YouTube Video channel

Today…… we are continuing our video Series on “Everything you ever wanted to know about SIBO” and specifically In todays video, I wanted to cover the 10 most common signs of small Intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

If you or a loved one is suspecting SIBO-or you have more than half of these signs or symptoms that I will be talking about here shortly, then you want to get tested for SIBO. and I will leave a link in the description and on my website on how you can do that.

Todays video is going to be part of a video series I am doing on SIBO, Probably about 9 or 10 videos that I think will provide you with an enormous amount of information- I’m hoping that this information- will help you really understand many of the fine points when it comes to addressing SIBO and ultimately it is these fine points that will help improve your success in treatment.

When To Get tested for SIBO-10 Most Common Signs of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) 2

Not Everybody With Bloating Has SIBO

One more thing, before we get started and go over these 10 most common clues that you have SIBO- I want you to understand that not everybody with a GI problem has SIBO- there are many reasons behind diarrhea, bloating, constipation, Gas, acid reflux

Even if you get tested and your test shows up positive, SIBO may not be the primary causes of your symptoms, you may have other problems in addition to the SIBO. That is super important to understand- there is a tremendous amount of overlap in the symptoms of SIBO with other GI problems.

Things like leaky gut, histamine intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity, Gluten Cross Reactivity, lactose intolerance, food allergies, Candida, Parasites, Pancreatic malabsorption, Bile Acid mal-absorption, Autoimmune disease, chronic pancreatitis, Hepatitis and the list goes on. This is why I strongly believe in testing and not guessing.

So while this video series is about SIBO- You want to work with a doctor who understands these other conditions and has the experience to determine when testing is needed.

When it comes to SIBO, I have found that if a patient has half or more of these 10 signs, along with the typical symptoms of SIBO- It justifies getting tested and in other videos, I will show you the test I recommend, why I recommend it, the different kinds of breath testing etc.

10 Most Common Signs of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.

Reason#1 When a patient develops IBS following a bout food poisoning- we call this gastroenteritis. Sometimes, it can take about 10 months before you start to put the two and two together.

Reason#2 When a patient reports a temporary improvement in IBS symptoms after a course of antibiotic treatment- for some people it is a noticeable improvement but then get worse weeks after discontinuing the antibiotics. What the antibiotics did here is obvious- they knocked down the infection… a little bit.  But in later videos, you will learn that antibiotics are not really the best way to treat SIBO.

Reason#3 When a patient reports worsening of IBS symptoms after eating meals that are high in sugars, starches, carbohydrates, foods high in histamines like fermented foods, or probiotic supplements

( in a free guide that I put together, I review these foods and give you examples of each- so if you are not familiar with the term FODMAPS- then download my free guide, look at the list of foods and see if you notice an increase in your IBS symptoms when you eat these foods.

Best Probiotics To Take When You Have SIBO and When To Introduce Them

Also- take a look at your probiotics- does it say GOS, FOS or Inulin? These are what are called prebiotics and when an overgrowth exists- in some people these prebiotics feed the bacteria and of course cause more bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and gas.

Reason #4 you should be suspicious of SIBO. Do you notice that eating more fiber increases constipation and bloating.

Reason #5- You have skin conditions such as Rosacea, Eczema, Rashes, or Acne- Maybe you have had these problems your entire life, maybe they started a few years after a gut infection.

Reason #6 you should consider SIBO- You have a Thyroid problem that is not improving with thyroid hormone replacement. There is a strong correlation between thyroid disease and SIBO- Thyroid problems are associated with low stomach acid and low stomach acid is one of the causes behind SIBO overgrowth

Reason #7 When a patient develops IBS- C or constipation dominant IBS after taking pain killers, opiates, antacids or proton pump inhibitors. These medications can tear up your gut, disrupt the microbiome and damage the intestinal brush border.

Reason #8 You have chronic vitamin and minerals deficiencies– things likes low B12 levels, Low vitamin D, Low iron or low ferritin, low magnesium, or potassium. All of these things show up on blood testing.

Reason #9– kind of goes with #8- You are losing weight because you are not absorbing nutrients and you are becoming increasing nutrient deficient and ultimately malnourished

Reason #10 – You started a gluten free and dairy free and you did it perfectly, but you didn’t notice much of an improvement. I find that many people who have SIBO due have a gluten sensitivity- and I am seeing more and more patients who have even gone grain free and are still struggling. So If that’s you- I recommend SIBO testing.

I know I said I was going to give you 10 reason but this one is important as well.

Reason #11 would be- Pain or pressure when you push in the area of the ileocecal valve– if you look at this picture- this is the general location of Ileocecal valve. If you notice any pressure here, then this is a significant finding. In many of the upcoming videos, I am going to show you how to massage and release this IC valve manually, and discuss the things that interfere with normal function of this valve.

So there you have it the 10 plus clues that you should be tested for SIBO. If you can relate to half of these or more and you have all the typical SIBO symptoms its time for you to get tested and see if SIBO is one of the contributing factors to poor gut health.

I hope you liked today’s video, make sure to comment below, don’t forget to subscribe because in my next video- I’m going to talk about the different kinds of breath testing, the advantages and disadvantages of each, I’m going to show you what a breath test looks like and explain more about what we look at when it comes to breath testing.

If you are interested in getting tested for SIBO, I will also put a link where I recommend you get that testing done.
