Treating Your Autoimmune Hashimotos Thyroid and Hypothyroidism.
What NOT to do.
Self-Treat Your Autoimmune Thyroid Disorder.
Is a recipe for disaster. Let’s remember that we’re dealing with an autoimmune thyroid condition here, so for anyone who thinks they can cure their condition by simply take a few supplements and/or herbal remedies, you will be extremely disappointed with the outcome. I had a lady come to our office not that long ago taking over 25 different supplements and spending over $500 per month. This is Crazy! For many of you taking a shopping bag of supplements, I hate to say this but…..your supplements could be making you worse and you are wasting your money.
Thyroid problem are complex espcially Hashimotos. Truth to be told, even “simple” cases of hypothyroidism are risky to self-treat, so you can imagine how difficult treating Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis can be on your own.
Also of importance is an understanding of how certain herbal medicines can excite a particular branch of the immune system and this may be a bad thing. If you remember in past articles, I have written about Th1(T cells) and Th2(B cells) branches of the immune system. They function as a teeter totter.
Natural Medicine like Echinacea, Astragalus, Licorice root, Maitake mushroom, Pomegranate all stimulate Th1 (T cell) pathway activity/production, whereas Coffee, green tea extract, grapseed, pine bark extract, all stimulate Th2 or B cell production/activity.
My advice here is to work with someone extremely knowledgeable about natural medicine and its effects on autoimmune conditions. This is a very complex area not for the sales clerk at the local vitamin shop, or Herbal life distributor.
If you have an autoimmune condition you need to be careful about the use of Iodine, multi vitamins and medications that are derived from cornstarch, Vinegar and Tyrosine.
Nevertheless, some people will visit their local health food store and try to save money by treating the condition on their own. What almost always happens is that they don’t experience optimal results, wasting their money on supplements and wind up getting worse due to the excitation of the autoimmune attack.
If you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis you have a multitude of nutritional deficiencies and metabolic problems. These problems range from simple vitamin deficiencies, to more complex problems such hormonal imbalances, Thyroid conversion problems, gut infections, inflammation, food sensitivities and finally inflammation. You need to work with someone knowledgeable in blood chemistry analysis, immune function, and hormones.
Most patients come to our office seeking help, have had blood work but have not had a comprehensive metabolic evaluation. Often many blood markers are missing and many of the advanced tests now available have not been run. This is where we come in.
It’s no wonder so many men and women struggle with Thyroid problems when no one has taken the time to investigate why you have the problems you do. Remember each of us have a different biochemistry and our unique biochemistry requires us to have a different path to get well.
Do yourself a favor and consult with a competent doctor who specialized in functional medicine, as they will evaluate your condition and give you the guidance you need to restore your health back to normal, assuming this is possible of course.
Searching For A Qualified Functional Medicine Doctor When It Comes to Your Thyroid.
While consulting with a Functional Medicine practitioner is usually the best thing to do, the problem is that it’s not easy to find someone who has a lot of experience helping people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.
Most holistic doctors in my experience still fail to run all of the proper testing that people with Hahsimotos desperately need. With the complexities of Auto immune conditions and the consequences of poor management or mismanagement it is essential to run the proper tests and not cut corners.
Many insurance companies refuse to pay for the proper testing that many people need and pay for doctors to sit down and spend 45 minutes to an hour consulting with you. However, the alternative is
A) At the very least continue to suffer
B)Let your condion get worse with time
C) Potentially suffer from a life threatening disease
D) Get the proper testing and treatment you need in order to get well despite what your insurance company “allows” it’s “managed care doctors” to do.
